Training MARS experts on crop yield forecasting under extreme events

This MODEXTREME Training Workshop, “Training MARS experts on crop yield forecasting under extreme events“, was hosted by European Commission Joint Research Centre. It was addressed to Monitoring Agricultural ResourceS (MARS) experts.

 

Description of the workshop (topics and goals)

The workshop aimed at presenting to the MARS analysts of the JRC the results obtained during the project for what concerns crop yield forecasts. In particular, the forecasting capability of standard (currently used at the JRC) and improved (for extreme weather events) modelling solutions were shown in a comparative fashion and discussed. The forecasting capability of hybrid solutions (based on dynamic simulation models and on agroecological indicators) was also shown for MARS crops at EU level. Moreover, changes in model behavior (analyzed with advanced sensitivity analysis techniques under a variety of scenarios) due to the implementation of MODEXTREME impact models were presented and discussed. In the case of rice, MODEXTREME results were discussed in light of the results achieved within another EU-FP7 project (“ERMES”).
